Frigid and Torrid

In this short story, the teacher asks “What are the two genders?” and the student responds, “Masculine and feminine. The masculines are divided into temperate and intemperate and the feminines into frigid and torrid”. Based on its position in the newspaper, this is likely intended as a joke, but that joke is left somewhat open to interpretation.
